Weyerbacher Seventeen — Reviewed By: Morey

Brewery:  Weyerbacher Brewing Co.

City – State – Country:  Easton, PA  USA

Style:  Saison

Alcohol:  10.5%

Release/Date:  Bottled  Once for 17th Anniversary

Purchased:  Save On Tobacco & Beverage in Mentor, Ohio

INFORMATION: Here’s what Weyerbacher has to say about this beer….. “Seventeen is a Saison Ale brewed with pink peppercorns, orange zest, lemon zest, and grapefruit zest.  Brewed to the classic “Weyerbacher anniversary requirement” of a strength of 10% abv or more, Seventeen weighs in at a style-obliterating 10.5% abv.  Seventeen releases subtle notes of fruit, berry and pepper upon pouring. You’ll notice a balanced sweetness with a touch of citrus and spice with a dry and peppery finish.”

APPEARANCE: Pours a cloudy yellow-orange color with about a half of an inch of white foam sitting on top. The head settled pretty quick, but there’s some decent retention & alcohol legs following each sip.

AROMA: Flower Petals, Lemon Rind, Wet Lawn, Grapefruit, Pepper, and some Alcohol in the nose.

TASTE: There’s a nice dose of Belgian yeast flavor up front. It’s fairly sweet with some nice citrus flavors that help to balance this some. I’m also getting a decent amount of alcohol coming through towards the middle. There’s some flowery notes, as well as the big Belgian yeast characteristics that comes back for more towards the back-end.  Some lingering alcohol heat on the finish.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied with a pretty low carbonation level.

MOREY’S BOTTOM LINE: This is the highest ABV that I’ve had in a Saison.  It works, but makes it more of a sipper as opposed to the normally refreshing and easy drinking qualities that you would normally get from the style.  I could have used a bit more peppercorn. It comes through some in the aroma, but I didn’t get much in the taste.  I’m definitely glad that I got to try this one.

Score:  3.75 out of 5
