Weyerbacher Whiskey Barrel Aged — Reviewed By: Morey

Brewery:  Weyerbacher Brewing Co.

City – State – Country:  Easton, PA  USA

Style:  Barrel Aged Brown Ale

Alcohol: 9%

Release/Date:  Brewed once – available at brewery only

Purchased:  Beer Trade

Information: Straight from Weyerbacher’s website…..“Whiskey Barrel Aged” is a big, dark, malty Brown Ale aged in whiskey barrels.  It comes in at 9.0% ABV and 27 IBU.  We used a blend of six different malts to give this one notes of sweet dried fruits.  The beer was then aged in whiskey barrels to impart big flavors of vanilla, oak, and whiskey.

Appearance: Dark chocolate brown in color with about a half finger of tan colored head following a medium-aggressive pour.  When you hold this one up to the light, it reveals a ruby red beer with really good clarity.  Not much in the way of retention and/or lacing with this beer.

Aroma: Chocolate Malt, Caramel, Bourbon, Oak, Vanilla Bean, & mild Coffee notes.

Taste: There’s some really nice chocolate and caramel flavors up front.  The whiskey and bourbon aren’t far behind providing some hints of alcohol towards the middle.  I’m getting cocoa and burnt sugar towards the back-end with some lingering bourbon after the swallow.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied (maybe just a bit thin for the style).  Low level of carbonation with a nice alcohol presence.

Morey’s Bottom Line: I was really excited to get 4 bottles of this “brewery only” release from Weyerbacher.  It’s the first Barrel Aged Brown Ale that I’ve had, and it helps to kick a sometimes boring style up several notches.  Judging by the taste, I’d venture to guess that Weyerbacher uses the same barrels for this beer as they do for Insanity and Heresy.  Good stuff.
